What actually drives the price
- Experience. A DJ who has played hundreds of weddings knows how to read a room and recover a quiet dancefloor. That skill is most of what you are paying for.
- Hours of coverage. Reception-only is the baseline. Adding ceremony audio and cocktail hour extends both time and equipment.
- MC duties. A DJ who also hosts your night replaces a separate MC hire and keeps the run sheet in one set of hands.
- Production lighting. Uplighting and dance floor visuals transform a venue and add equipment, setup time and design work.
- Backup equipment and insurance. Professionals carry redundant gear and public liability cover. Budget quotes usually do not.
- Travel. Regional Victorian venues (Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Geelong and beyond) may add a travel fee.

Is a wedding DJ cheaper than a live band? +
Yes, significantly. A Melbourne wedding band typically costs $4,000 to $12,000 depending on the lineup, while a professional DJ with lighting is usually $1,500 to $3,500. Many couples do both: a soloist for the ceremony, a DJ for the party. We coordinate exactly that through our live music service.
What should be included in the price? +
At minimum: a planning consultation, a personalised music plan and run sheet, professional sound, wireless microphones for speeches, and backup equipment. If a quote does not mention backup gear or planning time, ask why it is cheap.
Do prices change by season or day? +
Peak season Saturdays (October to April) are in highest demand and book out 9 to 12 months ahead. Some suppliers offer better rates for Fridays, Sundays and winter dates, so if your date is flexible it is worth asking.
What questions should we ask before booking? +
Ask how many weddings they have played, whether they MC as well as DJ, what happens if equipment fails, whether they take song requests from you and your guests, and whether they have played your venue before. The answers separate professionals from hobbyists faster than any price comparison.
